Costume Design Concept Statement
As viewers settle into the play, they will begin to realize that beneath the crippling façade, there are darker messages and intentions. In this play, one’s faith is questioned, realities are altered, and the cosmos are dying. The various elements of costuming throughout Marisol will hold true to the play’s own realism, and will be centered in modern day. Each costume is catered to every character and is meant to be layered so as to add depth to their personality throughout a scene. The overall feeling will reflect the idea that there is more truth or suspense beneath the surface. The main guidelines to the costume design are through colors translated from religious text, a character’s “placement” in the rank of survival, and character emotions/personality.
