The Birthday Party.

Harold Pinter.
Sound Design Concept Statement

In this play, the truth is questioned, actions are mysterious, and the mind is left absent. The various elements of sound throughout The Birthday Party may lend itself to realism, but will slowly decay, and then all together crash in an unexpected way. The overall feeling will reflect Stanley’s questionable state of being, the mysterious arrival of Goldberg and McCann, and the displacement of the “normal” mind. The main guidelines to the placement of the acoustic elements are through the progression of the acts, character-evoked sounds, and character-specific sounds.

A list of sounds in chronological order.

From the beginning, there were two particular moments where sound was key, but I decided to move in a different direction towards the moments of sound that were specific to Stanley. As for my chosen sound moments, they are explained here.
